A. Alentejo

Évora - The Cathedral

 

12 May - Departure from Lisbon in the morning for Évora. Arrive in Évora by lunch time. Lunch in a traditional restaurant in Evora. In the afternoon visit this beautiful city which was given the status of World Heritage by UNESCO. Admire the Roman Temple of Diana, the Cathedral, the University and the Chapel of Bones. Transfer to your hotel in Évora.
Dinner and accomodation at your hotel in Évora.

13 May - Breakfast at the hotel. Departure in the morning for Vila Viçosa and visit the Paço Ducal. Then continue to the city of Portalegre. Lunch will be served in a traditional restaurant. Then in the afternoon continue to the small village of Marvão and explore, then to Castelo de Vide and visit this charming place with a beautiful view over the region. Transfer to your hotel in Castelo de Vide.
Dinner and accomodation at your hotel in Castelo de Vide.

14 May - Breakfast at the hotel. Departure in the morning driving through this beautiful region of the Alentejo passing by small villages such as Crato, Alter do Chão, Aviz and Arraiolos: famous for its tapestries. Then drive to Lisbon with a stop for lunch in the charming area of the Arrabida mountain (for example Palmela). After lunch arrive in Lisbon at your hotel.

B. Madeira

Funchal - Town Hall Square
Ribeira Brava

12 May - Arrival at Funchal airport and transfer to your hotel in the centre of the city. The transfer will be approximately 25 minutes drive. Check-in at the hotel and have free time for lunch. In the afternoon (14.00h) departure for a half day tour of Funchal. Visit its traditional Flower Market, the historical centre, the Madeira Wine company with wine tasting and then take the cable car up to Monte and have a ride on Funchal's traditional toboggans. Return to the hotel. Free time for dinner. Overnight stay.

13 May - Full day excursion to Porto Moniz. Leaving Funchal, drive along to Câmara de Lobos, Cabo Girão and Ribeira Brava across the island via Encumeada to the village of São Vicente and then along the north coast to Porto Moniz where we stop for lunch. After lunch cross the plateau of Paúl da Serra down to Calheta and Ponta do Sol before we return to Funchal. Free time for dinner. Overnight stay.

14 May - Free time until the departure transfer to Funchal airport.

C. Porto & the North

12 May - Departure from Lisbon in the morning for Porto, with some stops on the way. Arrival in Porto at lunch time. Lunch in a traditional restaurant in the historical Ribeira area. In the afternoon start the exploring the city including the Cathedral, the São Francisco Church, the Stock Exchange Palace and, of course, a visit to one of the famous Portwine cellars with wine tasting.
Then check-in at your hotel in Porto (4-star hotel), accommodation and dinner in the hotel’s restaurant.
Overnight.
Note: For those participants who arrive directly at Porto International airport: pick up at the hotel before lunch.

13 May - Transfer from your hotel to the quay. Board the ship for a Douro cruise as far as Régua with breakfast and lunch served on board. Arrival in Régua and take the picturesque train back to Porto to allow you to enjoy the wonderful landscapes of the Douro valley.
Transfer from the quay to your hotel in Porto. Dinner at the hotel.
Overnight.

14 May - Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning visit the beautiful city of Guimarães – the birthplace of Portugal - including the historical area and the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança. Then continue to Braga and visit the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte. Lunch will be served in a traditional restaurant in Braga. Then return to Lisbon with some stops on the way back.
Arrival in Lisbon at the end of the afternoon.

Departure for the centre, to visit Lisbon’s most important monuments and interesting tourist sights of St. George Castle, the Alfama (Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood), the Monastery of Jerónimos and the Tower of Belém, both masterpieces of Portuguese Manueline Architecture.
English speaking guide. Includes entrance fees at the different monuments.

2. Lisbon City Tour – Full day tour

Lisbon - Rossio Square



In the morning visit the Belém district including Jerónimos Monastery a masterpiece of Manueline architecture. Then visit the Coach Museum which has one of the most complete and beautiful collections of Royal Coaches. Then continue on to The Tower of Belém, drive back along the river Tagus, passing by the Monument to the Discoveries and reaching the Praça do Comércio Square. Then drive up the hill to the historical area of Lisbon, passing by the Cathedral and have a walk to St. George Castle where you can admire an amazing view over the city. Walk back through the narrow streets of the most ancient district of Lisbon: Alfama. Lunch included in a traditional restaurant.
In the afternoon visit the fascinating Tile Museum of Lisbon, housed in the Madre Deus Convent.
Then return to the city centre and have a panoramic tour of the most important squares and avenues of the city: Rossio Square, Restauradores Square, Avenida da Liberdade, Marques de Pombal Square.

Visit to Cabo da Roca, the most western point of continental Europe and proceed to the old fishing village of Cascais. Return to Lisbon passing by the famous seaside resort Estoril.

4. Mafra/Sintra – Full day tour

Morning departure for Queluz and visit the National Palace of Queluz - a sumptuous Palace dating back to the 18th century - then on to Mafra and visit the Basilica. Then continue to Sintra - lunch included in a nice restaurant - and visit the Royal Palace in the historical centre of Sintra. Free time in the centre and then drive along the coastal road to the most western point of Europe - Cabo da Roca. Drive on to Cascais, passing by the beautiful beach of Guincho, and continue along the coast back to Lisbon.

5. Arrábida/Sesimbra – Full day tour

Sesimbra Castle

Cross the 25th April Bridge over the River Tagus and have a superb view over the city. Drive to Sesimbra and visit the old castle of this picturesque small town. Then onto Azeitão, famous for its cheese and visit the well-known wine cellars of the region and enjoy a wine tasting. Then drive through the Arrábida Mountain range - a unique Nature Reserve - and admire the breathtaking views over the ocean. Visit Setúbal - the third biggest city in Portugal. On the way back stop at the Pousada do Castelo in Palmela. Return to Lisbon by the Vasco da Gama Bridge.

After lunch, return to Lisbon.

7. Nazaré/Alcobaça

Alcobaça - Monastery



Departure from Lisbon to Alcobaça - visit the impressive Monastery of Alcobaça with the tombs of D. Pedro and D. Inês. Then continue to Nazaré - the most picturesque fishing village of Portugal. Visit the village and the Sitio belvedere – with its beautiful view over the beach of Nazaré. Free time. Lunch in a traditional restaurant facing the sea. After lunch, return to Lisbon.
Entrance fee at the Monastery of Alcobaça included.

8. Fátima


Departure in the morning to Fátima, which has one of the most important Christian centres of pilgrimage: Our Lady of Fatima. In Fátima visit the Sanctuary including the little Chapel of the Apparitions and also the impressive Basilica which houses the tombs of Francisco and Jacinta, two of the little shepherds to whom our Lady appeared. Free time in Fátima. Then continue to Aljustrel, a small village near Fátima, and visit the houses where Jacinta, Francisco and Lúcia were born. Lunch in a nice restaurant in Fátima. After lunch, return to Lisbon.
